Terms of service
Last updated: 23 July 2026
These terms govern your use of SQID (sqid.co.nz), New Zealand’s marketplace for buying and selling second-hand fishing rods, reels and tackle, operated by SQID (“SQID”, “we”, “us”). By creating an account or using the site, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use SQID.
Our privacy policy and shipping & returns policy are part of these terms by reference.
1. Eligibility
You must be 18 or older to create a SQID account or complete a purchase. We verify this at signup and block registration where it isn’t met. You must provide accurate legal name and identity information when asked, SQID may suspend or close accounts found to be falsified.
2. Your account
- One account per person. Keep your login credentials confidential, you’re responsible for activity under your account.
- Your display name/username is public; your legal name, date of birth and mobile number are never shown to other users.
- We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, engage in fraud, abuse other users, or pose a risk to the marketplace, with or without notice depending on severity.
- You can delete your account at any time from account settings, see our privacy policy for what happens to your data when you do.
3. Listings
SQID is a marketplace for fishing gear only. Every listing must be an item of fishing equipment, bait/berley, or an accessory directly used for fishing — for example rods, reels, lines, lures, terminal tackle, fishing-specific electronics (e.g. fish finders), fishing apparel and waders, and fishing-specific kayak/boat accessories. Items that aren’t fishing-related — including general sporting goods, unrelated electronics, vehicles, clothing or footwear with no fishing purpose, or other general resale items — aren’t permitted, even if listed under a fishing category.
As a seller, you agree that:
- You own the item, or have the right to sell it, and your listing accurately describes its condition, brand and any defects.
- You won’t list anything illegal, stolen, counterfeit, recalled, or that infringes someone else’s intellectual property.
- Rod listings comply with SQID’s RodSafe packaging requirements before shipping (see how it works).
- SQID may remove any listing, or require changes to it, at our discretion, including for suspected prohibited items, misleading descriptions, or policy violations.
4. Offers, Buy Now & orders
Buy Now creates a binding sale once payment succeeds. An accepted offer is also binding, the buyer has a set window to complete payment before it lapses. Sellers who accept an offer or receive a Buy Now purchase are expected to fulfil it; repeated cancellations may lead to account restrictions.
5. Fees & payments
Buyers pay a buyer fee of 5% of the order plus $0.99, capped at $24.99, shown as a separate line at checkout on top of the item price and delivery. This fee is what funds Buyer Protection, the payment hold and dispute process described in section 6, so a buyer’s payment stays protected until they confirm receipt or the confirmation window passes. Sellers pay a Secure Selling Fee of 3.5% of the sale plus $0.30, deducted from the payout, a secure transaction fee that covers Stripe’s own payment processing costs plus running SQID’s Secure Seller and payout system. Fees may change from time to time; the fee shown at the time of sale is what applies to that sale. Payments are processed by Stripe; seller payouts are made via Stripe Connect to the bank account you connect during onboarding.
6. Buyer protection, delivery & disputes
SQID holds a buyer’s payment until they confirm receipt or a confirmation window passes, and provides a dispute process if something’s wrong with an order. Full details, including delivery responsibilities, courier liability, and how disputes are resolved, are set out in our shipping & returns policy, which forms part of these terms. As set out there, the outcome of any dispute is decided at SQID’s sole discretion and our decision is final.
7. Seller shipping responsibilities
Beyond the Secure Selling Fee described in section 5, SQID does not provide seller insurance or Seller Protection. Payment to the seller remains conditional on the seller completing the transaction in accordance with SQID’s shipping, tracking and communication requirements.
Sellers must provide accurate and verifiable tracking when confirming dispatch. Incorrect, invalid or delayed tracking may result in payment being held, delayed or returned to the buyer where the failure prevents SQID from monitoring delivery, notifying the buyer or confirming that the item was securely delivered.
Where a seller fails a material shipping requirement and the item is lost, misdelivered or stolen before secure delivery can be confirmed, SQID may refund the buyer using the seller’s pending transaction proceeds.
Where secure delivery is confirmed through a signature, collection record, delivery PIN or another approved method, the seller may remain entitled to payment. Theft occurring after confirmed secure delivery is generally not covered by Buyer Protection.
Where the buyer expressly authorises an unattended delivery or authority to leave, the buyer may assume the risk of theft after the carrier records valid delivery to the approved location.
8. Reviews & conduct
Reviews must reflect a genuine trade experience, don’t post fake, retaliatory, or manipulated reviews. Messaging, offers and reviews are moderated; abusive, harassing, or off-platform-payment-soliciting behaviour may result in account suspension. Content you submit (listing photos, descriptions, messages, reviews) must be your own or something you’re authorised to post, and must not be illegal, defamatory, or infringing.
9. Content licence
You keep ownership of the photos, descriptions and other content you upload. By posting it on SQID, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, display, reproduce and distribute it as needed to operate and promote the marketplace (including in search results, social/ad placements, and marketing), for as long as the content remains on SQID, and as reasonably needed afterwards for our own records.
10. Our role & limitation of liability
SQID provides the platform that lets buyers and sellers list, discover, transact and resolve issues with each other, we are not a party to the sale itself, and (as set out more fully in our shipping & returns policy) we are not responsible for a courier’s handling of a parcel, or either party’s failure to meet their obligations. To the maximum extent permitted by law, SQID’s total liability to you for any claim arising from your use of the site is limited to the fees you paid SQID in the 12 months before the claim arose. Nothing in these terms limits any right you have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or Fair Trading Act 1986 that cannot lawfully be excluded.
11. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify SQID against claims, losses or costs arising from your breach of these terms, misuse of the platform, or the item/content you list, to the extent caused by you.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. We’ll update the “Last updated” date above, and for material changes we’ll take reasonable steps to let you know. Continuing to use SQID after a change takes effect means you accept the updated terms.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand, and any dispute not resolved through our internal process is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
