How it works

SQID is New Zealand’s marketplace for buying and selling second-hand rods, reels and tackle, with payment protection built into every sale.

Buying on SQID

  1. Browse or search by category, brand, condition and region, or ask the seller a question directly on the listing.
  2. Buy Now, or make an offer. Most listings accept negotiated offers, the seller can accept, decline, or counter. Buy Now stays available the whole time; only a paid order takes a listing off the market.
  3. Check out and pay securely by card via Stripe. Most listings ship nationwide by courier, some also offer (or are limited to) local pickup, arranged directly with the seller. Checkout adds SQID’s Buyer Protection fee on top of the item and shipping (see “Fees” below). Your payment is held by SQID, not released to the seller yet.
  4. Track your order. Once the seller ships, you’ll see live courier tracking on your order page.
  5. Confirm receipt. When it arrives, confirm you’re happy with it. If something’s wrong, you can open a dispute instead, see “Buyer protection” below.
  6. Leave feedback. Once both sides have reviewed the trade (or the 14-day review window closes), reviews publish on each other’s profile.

Selling on SQID

  1. List your item, up to 12 photos, condition, brand/model, category, and a description. Set a price, and optionally accept offers.
  2. Set up delivery. Offer courier shipping with your own pricing, local pickup, or both, some items (like kayaks) are pickup only since they’re too big to courier.
  3. Get sold. A buyer pays via Buy Now or an accepted offer, the item is reserved to them the moment payment goes through.
  4. Ship promptly. Add courier tracking so the buyer’s confirmation window can start. Rod listings go through the RodSafe packaging check first, see below.
  5. Get paid. Once the buyer confirms receipt (or the confirmation window passes with no dispute), your payout releases to your Stripe account — the full item price and shipping, since founding sellers pay 0% fees (see “Fees” below). You only need to connect Stripe once you’ve made a sale, not to list, and until you do, your money stays held by SQID.

Buyer protection

When you pay for an item, SQID holds the funds rather than sending them straight to the seller. They’re only released once you’ve had a chance to check the item is as described:

  • Once tracking shows the item delivered (or you confirm receipt yourself), you have 48 hours to open a dispute if something’s wrong.
  • If you’re happy straight away, you can confirm instantly and release payment without waiting out the window.
  • If nothing’s flagged, the seller’s payout releases automatically once that window passes.
  • If tracking never confirms delivery at all, funds are not released automatically. After 7 days you’ll be asked directly whether the order arrived - your payment stays held until you answer.

RodSafe, packaging protection for rods

Rods are fragile in transit, so any listing in a rod category requires the seller to complete RodSafe before shipping: four sequential photos (the whole rod, protective padding at weak points, seated in a rigid tube, then sealed and labelled), taken within 48 hours of payment. It’s designed to reduce in-transit damage and gives both sides a documented record of how the item was packed.

Fees

Buying costs a Buyer Protection fee of 5% of the order (item + delivery) plus $0.99, capped at $24.99, shown as its own line at checkout before you pay. Listing an item is free, and so is selling one right now: founding sellers pay 0% fees, so the full item price and shipping goes to you. SQID covers Stripe’s processing costs while we get started, and we’ll give plenty of notice before any selling fee is introduced.
